| Massage Frequency for Age Group Competitors My motto:"the best injury is the one you never know about." Other than regular stretching, yoga, proper hydration and nutrition there is not much more you can do on your own to help you get to the starting line consistently. Those are the basics "the no brainers" that are not always practiced. How frustrating is it to put in all the training for your race and get injured just weeks away? If you have an issue that lasts more than a week or two and is not getting better GET ADVICE!! Do not blow it off. If you have to take time off your running always have a plan: physical therapy, chiropractic, massage-whatever. When you start to increase the miles those issues rarely get better on their own. This example is for marathoners but can be easily adapted for any sport. Call me if you have questions. Assuming you do not have any injury issues before you start your training here are some general guidelines: - After your first long run 10 to 12 miles schedule a massage. This one is the only optional one.
- Roughly Two weeks later 15 miler or so schedule a massage.
- Roughly Two weeks 18 miler the same.
- Roughly Two weeks 20 to 23 miler the same
- Roughly a week before your race the same.
- Mandatory ice bath post race on race day...NOT AN OPTION!
- Optional get a massage several days after your race.
Legs can be flushed out regularly with 30 minute sessions. 45 minute sessions are also available. A good year round massage maintenance plan is every 4 to 6 weeks.
